The surname Montgomery originates from the Norman family of Roger de Montgomerie, born around 1030 in Lisieux, Normandy, who became Joint-Regent of Normandy during William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066. He was created Earl of Arundel, and his descendants gave their name to Montgomeryshire in Wales. In Scotland, the first of the name recorded was Robert de Mundergumri, who obtained a grant of the Manor of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire in the 12th century. His name appears as a witness on charters issued by Walter FitzAlan between 1165 and 1177, suggesting that Robert accompanied Walter FitzAlan, ancestor of the Stewart kings, to Scotland with David I.
